SE and Web News:

Old Search Engine and web news.

May 2003:

Yahoo got a complete face lift with its acquisition of Inktomi, and now offers categories such as web, news, groups, images, Yellow Pages, and maps to help sort the results the surfer is searching for.  They also announced that they will continue to partner with Google (along with 90% of all the other search engines;-))

April 2003:

Macromedia held a conference back at the beginning of March.  The subject of the entire issue was getting a way for search engines to spider, index, and catalog flash pages so they could be found by major search engines.  FAST is one company that is jumping on the bandwagon early, and future results should be interesting.

Yahoo has purchased Inktomi.  In the past top search engine Google had used the Inktomi services.  Although Google and Yahoo are direct competitors, both have stated they intend to work together and share resources.  Expect to see the "Inktomi paid inclusion" results on your Yahoo search results soon.

Microsoft has set its gun sights on Google.  Microsoft has declared that they consider Google a competitor, and is directing efforts to deal with them as such.  Look for MSN and Looksmart to be making some major changes over the coming months.

General:

January 2003: DirectTV announces plans to discontinue its current Internet connection plan.  Shortly after that they roll out a new package called Direct Way Internet connection.

October 22, 2002: Large attack on the Internet with DDoS (denial of service) takes down large number of Internet servers and routers.

October 3, 2002: Technical issues took out a large number of DNS servers and crippled the Internet.

Many sites look to Alexa for relevant popularity information.

Orbitz has taken a fall due to its use of pay per clicks, and leading searchers to sites that are not what the Orbitz link claims to be.  Over the first half of 2003, Orbitz has spent a great deal of money in an advertising campaign to help recapture lost clients.

Zeal is making noise.  New to me at least, the zeal.com search engine has become very popular at least in Europe.
